Akçansa, empowersits leadership in the industry with 24 Million USD renewable energy investment
Waste Temperature Recycling Facilities that is the icon of the leadership in cement industry and sustainability approach of Akçansa is planned to be engaged in 2011.
Akçansa General Manager Hakan Gürdal said that an annuan energy saving of 105 million kWh will be provided with the facilities of 15,2 MW capacity that will produce energy from waste temperature. Gürdal said, “Therefore, we will generate 30% of the energy needed for our Çanakkale Factory from waste temperature. This also means energy saving in an amount of energy that is used by Çanakkale city Center demography in one year”.
Stating that the Waste Temperature Recycling Facility will prevent carbon emmission of approximately 60.000 tons annually as well as saving energy, Gürdal emphasized that this number is equal to the amoun of oxygen generated by 2,7 million (**) trees.
Sabancı Holding Cement Group President Mehmet Göçmen called attention to the fact that they now direct their investments that they have made on capacity until today to compliance investments and said that they plan to invest 200 million USD in the following year. HeidelbergCement Chairman of the Board Dr.Bernd Scheifele also gave the message, “We will continue investing in Turkey”.
Groundbreaking ceremony of the ‘Waste Temperature Recycling Facilities’ that are developed as a result of long term studies with the know how of Akçansa, which acts as a pioneer in cement insustry with its investments for a sustainable future was held with the participation of Çanakkale Mayor Abdulkadir Atalık, Sabancı Holding CEO Zafer Kurtul, HeidelbergCement Chairman of the Board Dr. Bernd Scheifele, Sabancı Holding Cement Group Persident Mehmet Göçmen, Akçansa Assistant Chairman Daniel Gauthier, Akçansa Board Member Emir Adıgüzel, Akçansa General Manager Hakan Gürdal and citizens of Çanakkale.
Second greatest investment of Akçansa
In his speech in the ceremony held in Akçansa Çanakkale Factory, Akçansa General Manager Hakan Gürdal stated that they have laid the foundation of a very important investment to the future of our country and the world and said, “Our Waste Temperature Recycling Project is our second greatest investment after our 2. production line we engaged in Çanakkale in 2008. We plan to engage the Waste Temperature Recycling Facilities that will be realized in our Çanakkale Factory as a first in Turkey and near geographies with an investment of 24 million dollars in 2011.”
It’s aimed to provide an annual energy saving of 105 million kwh in the facilities with 15,2 MW capacity and to supply 30% of the energy needed in Akçansa Çanakkale Factory. This number is equal to the energy consumption of Çanakkale central demography in one year.
This is the biggest facilities among all including other possible projects with the energy amount to be produced in relation to the production dimensions and technology of the factory.
With the facilities to be established, via the exchaners that will be installed in cooling exits of clinker production lines and preheater exits, the approximately 350-400 C temperature that exits the clinker cooling will be reduced to 70 C and hot gas at 300 – 350 C in preheater will be reduced to 230 c, and vapor at 1,25 MP will be generated. The generated vapor will be collected by pipelines and sent to the 15 MW powered turbine and electricity will be generated here.
When Akçansa Waste Temperature Recycling Facilities are engaged, approximately 60.000 carbon dioxide emission will be prevented annually as well as energy saving. 60 thousand tons of carbon emission is equivalent to the oxygen amount generated by approximately 2,7 million trees.
General Manager Gürdal declared that they will apply fort he ‘Gold Standard’, which is the most prestigious of ‘Voluntary Emission’ standards when the Waste Temperature Recycling Facilities is active, and said that they will underline their sensitivity to minimizing the impact of climate changes one more time.
Explaining the six main axes that the company determined in sustainability as “Work Health and Work Safety, Use of Waste as Resources, Sustainable Energy Resources, Biodiversity, Sustainable Construction Solutions and Environment Protection” Gürdal recorded that they established a Sustainability Committee and continued: “While preparing our company fort he future, we aim to place customer satisfaction at the top of our priorities and make our facilities sustainable by obtaining the support of the society beyond fulfilling our legal obligations. We will present all our studies for sustainability until today and our carbon footprint to the public in our first sustainability report that we will issue in the last quarter of this year as a first in Turkish cement industry.”
Gürdal also emphasized that they will register the new investment according to the “Notification on Registry Operations Related to the Projects Providing Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emission” that entered into effect by being published in Official Gazete on August 7, 2010.
“The main axis of our competitive power is sustainability”
In his speech at the ceremony, Sabancı Holding Cement Group President Mehmet Göçmen said, “We are in a new world order, where social and environmental issues are also in the area of responsibility of companies as well as creating economical value. Sustainability forms the main axis of our Group’s competitive power in this new global competition environment.”
Göçmen called attention to the fact that as a Group, they converted the great investments they have made until today to investments regarding compliance in order to be one step forward at the competition environment and carbon economy of tomorrow and said: “We plan on making investments of 200 million dollars in the next 5 years to this subject. The ‘Waste Temperature Recycling Project’ that was developed as a result of Akçansa’s intense studies since 2006 forms a great example for our Group’s approach to the issue and one of the most important steps of our investments to the future.”
Sabancı prioritizes energy and sustainable environment in investments
Articulating that they have foreseen that environmental sustainable growth will dominate the next years and directed their new investments to energy and sustainable environment fields, Sabancı Holding CEO Zafer Kurtul said, “Considering the fact that carbon economy and environmental sustainability will be obligations in future, we evaluate the new sustainable business opportunities such as renewable energy resources and waste management applications that will create value for all our stakeholders and the environment.”
HeidelbergCement: We trust Turkey, we will continue investments!
The Chairman of the Board for HeidelbergCement, which is one of the biggest cement producers in the world, Dr. Bernd Scheifele also recorded these in his speech, where he ephasized on Turkey’s potential: “Our point today shows that Turkey is a country that includes powerful opportunities towards future provided that the right investments are made. Especially, moving towards becoming a world leader in cement industry, Turkey attracts more and more attention every day with its export potential. HeidelbergCement is aware of this potentials and is determined to continue its investments in Turkey.”
