The world will breathe with Akçansa’s ‘One Carbon Two Oxygen’!
Calling the industrial companies and local authorities to apply to them for beneficiary disposal of their waste, Akçansa aims to help reduce the carbon footprints of organizations by this. www.atiginizibizegonderin.com website was established in order to promote the project and collect waste.
On the other hand, a tree is planted to the Akçansa Re-Life Forest realized with TEMA for every 10 tons of waste in order to support a greener environment.
Stating that several wastes and industrial by-products that fulfill the necessary requirements can be utilized in cement factories within the context of cement production and legal boundaries, Akçansa General Manager Hakan Gürdal said, “Therefore, both the problem of disposing of wastes in a healthy and reliable way is removed and the fuel need for industry is supplied. Thus, both fuel costs and carbondioxide emissions are reduced. As Akçansa, we consider this subject both in environmental and social responsibility and economical aspects. We are the first company to procure waste fulfilling the legal obligations related to waste disposal in cement industry and to invest in this area. We can dispose of waste such as scrap rubbers, waste oils, contaminated wastes, oil tank bottom mud, plastic, industrial plastic, bilge, liquid fuel, bleaching soil, mill soap and plant hulls in our factories. We believe that the real value can be provided by not only collecting waste, but also disposing of waste in a right way, and we call all the organizations to do so.”
Akçansa became a voluntary delegate for environment
Underlining that not all wastes are suitable for this process, Gürdal recorded that they have established the accredited Akçansa Environment and Quality Laboratory, which is the first AFR (Alternative Fuel and Raw-Materials) Laboratory of the industry with this objective. Stating that they provide economic, objective, independent and reliable service to all industry branches and almost ‘act as a guide’ for the industry, Gürdal said:
“As Akçansa, we volunteered for delegation in waste management subject. Because, cement industry contributes greatly to reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission procuring its raw materials and fuel by disposal of wastes instead of using first-hand fuel. This state inspired us for our ‘One Carbon Two Oxygen’ project. We offer to be the solution partners of state organizations and instutions and local authorities as well as all companies producing waste in cities we are active in with this project. We make a call; ‘Send us your waste’. We aim to help these organizations to reduce their carbon footprint by disposing of waste in a healthy and reliable way.”
Stating that HeidelbergCement, the foreign partner of Akçansa, is one of the most experienced companies in waste disposal and provides 90% of the need from waste in some factories, Gürdal said, “We benefit from HeidelbergCement’s experience. We believe that waste problem is not only the responsibility of authorities but also of organizations and individuals. We are ready to help the waste collectors with any problems within this context.”
24 million dollars investment to waste temperature
Akçansa General Manager Gürdal explained the activities they carry out for sustainable world and their plans as follows: “We established a sustainability committee in Akçansa and we work with the goal to promote the works carried out until today within the company with the participation of all functions. Within this context, we will publish our first sustainability report in accordance to GRI principles within the last quarter of 2010. We are in collaboration with the municipalities we are active in, with relation to both purification and solid waste management. We target to save an annual energy amount of 105 million kwh and provide 30% of the energy needed for the facilities with the new waste temperature project that will be established in our Çanakkale factory. We will prevent approximately 60.000 tons of carbon dioxide emission with 24 million dollars investment.”
Akçansa is the first cement company to participate in REW 2010
Gürdal declared that they decided to participate the 6. International Recycling Environment Technologies and Waste Management Fair (REW İSTANBUL) in order to make an “ecologist call” to organizations and institutions that need help with waste management, that can provide waste to cement industry and that have high environmental awareness. Underlining that they are the first cement company to participate this fair, Gürdal said, “REW Fair suits completely to the waste management strategy of Akçansa and its participation to this fair reflects its sensitivity on the subject. We invite all companies and local authorities interested in the subject and that demands our help and support on this subject to REW Fair.”
We could build 7.300 Sabancı Towers by stacking the tires combusted by Akçansa!
o The number of tires Akçansa combusted since obtaining its licenses reached to 8,7 millions. When these tires are stacked, their height reaches t0 1.600 kms. This means 7.300 Sabancı Tower or 1.970 Burj Dubai (world’s tallest building with 160 floors and 818 meters height) as height.
o Oils of 2.938 vehicles were changed with 14.688 liters of waste oil.
o All wastes combusted weigh 120.000 tons. 85.000 less imported coal was used with combustion of these wastes, and therefore natural resources were protected while providing support to the national economy.
