“The Environmental Impacts of Industry and Legislative Measures” panel, organized by the “Association for Beautifying Mimarsinan and Protecting its Environment”, which was sponsored by our Company was held in December 2004, at the Conference Hall of Mimarsinan Private High School. Mr. Ahmet V. Pekin, our Deputy General Manager (Operations) and B. Çekmece Plant Manager participated as a speaker at the panel where Mimarsinan and B. Çekmece Mayors, officials from the Provincial Directorate for the Environment and representatives of many non-governmental organizations from the neighborhood were among attendants.

Positive as well as negative impacts of industrial establishments, situated particularly in and around Mimarsinan, on the environment were assessed at the panel. Furthermore, the sufficiency of the environmental regulations and implementations especially in Turkey, and the concerns of municipalities were voiced.

Pekin in his address, underlined that our B. Çekmece plant has been operating in accordance with the norms laid down in Turkey and Europe and is highly conscious regarding the environment. Pekin also pointed out that although industry, on the whole is one of the sources of environmental pollution, it is the one to solve the problem. Pekin gave details on the investments and works made for the environment since many years at the Plant and pointed out the necessity that not only industrial organizations but public establishments and individuals should exert efforts for increasing consciousness level and that training on environmental issues should be more widespread.

Accordingly, environmental consciousness of our Plant, with an emission level well below Turkish and even European standards, was highlighted at the panel once more.
