A Concise Cement Glossary

Cement Mixture: A mixture that consists of cement and water.

Cement Mortar: A mixture that consists of cement, water and sand.

Hydration: Hardening of cement after being mixed with cement.

Setting time: In cement standards, setting time of cement is designated by two definitions, namely “Initial setting time” and “Final setting time”.

Initial setting time: Time elapsed until the mixture formed by mixing cement with water starts to harden (i.e. it loses its plastic properties).

Final setting time: Time elapsed until the mixture formed by mixing cement with water hardens.

Heat of hydration: Amount of heat emitted by cement during the hydration process; as measured between an initial particular temperature, until the end of the hydration process. Chemical reactions that initiate upon combination of cement with water are exothermic. As the reactions continue, heat emission continues as well. Heat of hydration, which at first is high, decreases gradually.

Meanings of the symbols:

Figures 32,5; 42,5; and 52,5: Designate the minimum compression strength at 28 days, in N/mm2. This test is conducted on cement mortar. The test requires special sand, namely “standard sand”.

“R”: Designates rapid strength feature, in owing to the word “Rapid” in English.

“N”: Designates that “No” rapid strength feature is involved.

“A”, “B” and “C”: Designate the amount of additive employed.
“A” stands for low additive content,
“B” stands for high additive content,
“C” stands for higher additive content.

“M”: Stands for composite cement.
