A global achievement by the Turkish students producing a project for a sustainable future
Biodiversity Project Competition, aiming to increase the biological values of the mining sites, was held in Turkey for the third time by Akçansa, Turkey's leader construction materials company.
In the competition where 23 countries have attended, İzmir Çakabey College students and consultants received the first prize in HeidelbergCement Quarry Life Awards held in Belgium.
The Biodiversity Project Competition, organized by Akçansa with the aim of allowing the students and academicians to produce projects increasing the biological values of the mine sites and to increase the awareness on this matter, is held for the third time in Turkey.
The finalist projects were announced at the award ceremony. Five projects among the projects taking part in the competition from all around Turkey were rewarded in two individual categories.
Private Çakabey College students and consultants represented Turkey with their project at the HeidelbergCement Quarry Life Awards in Germany and received the first prize in the competition.
The project aims regaining plant diversity in rocky and inefficient areas by applying vertical garden technique allowing the stone walls or dried surfaces turn into a green living spaces.
Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University and İzmir Çakabey College ranked first in the Scientific Research Category of the Biodiversity Project Competition where they attended with innovative and creative ideas. Students received their awards from the Akçansa General Manager Umut Zenar and the competition’s jury member Ediz Hun.
Çanakkale Doğa College and Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University ranked second in the Social Benefit category.
Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University also received the Honorable Mention award.

Akçansa General Manager Umut Zenar stated that they consider sustainability with its social, environmental and economic aspects and said, “Protection of biological diversity and ecosystem management have a key role for the future of our industry. Operating with this awareness and strategy at Akçansa, we set biodiversity management as one of six prioritized topics within the scope of our sustainability strategy, and we have taken it among the sustainability targets for the year 2020.
Zenar highlighted that they are a company which always attaches importance to the ideas and perspectives of the youth and said, “One of Akçansa’s important characteristics is attaching importance to the ideas and perspectives of the youth and listening to them and supporting their creativity. This competition we organize to increase the biological values of the mine sites is a very good proof to this.”
