Akçansa's history goes back to the founding of Akçimento in 1967. The company has become the biggest cement producer of Turkey through the merger of Akçimento with Çanakkale Çimento in 1996. Akçansa is a joint venture between Sabancı Holding and HeidelbergCement; 79.4 % of the company's shares are equally owned by Sabancı Holding and HeidelbergCement, whereas the remaining 20.6 % of the shares are owned by the public.

Akçansa is operating in Marmara, Aegean and Black Sea regions in cement and ready mixed concrete sectors. The company has three cement plants in Istanbul and Çanakkale and three cement terminals in Ambarlı, Aliağa and Yalova. Since its merger with its former participation Betonsa in 1998, Akçansa has been providing service at its more than 32 ready mixed concrete facilities distributed at various points in the Marmara, Aegean and Black Sea regions under the "Betonsa" brand. Akçansa has merged with yet another participation, namely Agregasa - Agrega San.ve Tic. A.Ş. in 2002 "Agregasa" brand and has been carrying its aggregate production at its three facilities located on both sides at Istanbul.

Akçansa has aimed "to be the best in quality, in production and service" in order to fulfill the requirements of domestic customers and overseas customers among Turkey's major cement exporter, and to be competitive beyond price factor in this industry where distinction is extremely challenging.
